One of the biggest myths in hair is this:

“If I cut it shorter, it’ll be easier.”

Sometimes that’s true.

But often?
Shorter hair can actually be more work.

And I say that as someone who has had just about every hair length imaginable over the years.

Long hair. Mid-length hair. Bobs. Pixies. Grow-outs. The awkward in-between phases. All of it.

So if you’re thinking about going shorter and assuming it means less effort, here’s what I’d want you to know first.

Shorter Hair Usually Needs More Frequent Haircuts

Longer hair can often go a little longer between trims without losing its overall shape.

Shorter cuts are different.

When the shape is more defined, even a little extra growth can make a big difference.

That means shorter styles often need maintenance every 4–8 weeks depending on the cut and your hair texture.

If you love a polished look, regular appointments matter.

Styling Often Becomes More Important

With long hair, it’s easier to:

  • Throw it in a ponytail
  • Put it in a bun
  • Curl only part of it
  • Hide a rough hair day

Shorter hair doesn’t always give you those same options.

Sometimes it needs:

  • Blow drying for shape
  • Product for texture
  • Smoothing certain areas
  • Styling the front pieces daily

Less hair doesn’t always equal less effort.

Cowlicks and Texture Can Show Up More

Longer hair has weight.

That weight can naturally pull hair down and help disguise things like cowlicks, bends, uneven texture, or spots that want to flip a certain direction.

When hair is shorter, those natural growth patterns tend to show up more.

That can mean:

  • A crown area that pops up
  • Front pieces that bend strangely
  • Ends that flip out
  • More volume in places you didn’t ask for

None of that means short hair is bad — it just means it may need a little more strategy.

But Short Hair Can Still Be the Right Choice

This isn’t a warning against going short.

Short hair can be stylish, freeing, fresh, and confidence-boosting.

Sometimes it’s exactly the change someone needs.

The key is making sure you’re choosing shorter hair for the right reasons — not because someone told you it would automatically be easier.

What I Help Clients Think Through First

Before making a big change, we talk about:

  • How much time you actually want to style your hair
  • Whether you like using product or heat tools
  • Your natural texture
  • How often you want maintenance appointments
  • What length feels most like you right now

Because the best haircut is the one that fits your real life.
